{"id":13939,"date":"2023-09-04T11:19:55","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T09:19:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calcul-electrique.com\/non-classifiee\/checking-the-short-circuit-closing-capacity-of-switching-devices\/"},"modified":"2024-12-23T15:21:20","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T14:21:20","slug":"checking-the-short-circuit-closing-capacity-of-switching-devices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calcul-electrique.com\/en\/en-articles\/checking-the-short-circuit-closing-capacity-of-switching-devices\/","title":{"rendered":"Checking the short-circuit closing capacity of switching devices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\">If a switching device can be closed on a pre-existing short-circuit in the electrical installation, it is necessary to check that this operation will not destroy the device.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-c2473df1\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Calculating and taking into account values<\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\">The current value to be taken into account for this check is the maximum possible instantaneous value of the presumed short-circuit current at the moment of closure, i.e. the peak value of the short-circuit current <sub>Ip<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\"><strong>Calculation of <strong><sub>Ip<\/sub><\/strong> according to NF EN 60909-0<\/strong>: NF EN 60909-0 provides the formula for calculating the current <sub>Ip<\/sub>:<strong> <sub>Ip<\/sub> = <em>K<\/em> \u221a2 <sub>Ik<\/sub><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\"><sub>Ik<\/sub> is the maximum RMS short-circuit current at the short-circuit point, and <em>K<\/em> is a coefficient dependent on the ratio R\/X of the short-circuit impedance (seen from the short-circuit point). The maximum value of <em>K<\/em> is 2. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\"><strong>Calculation of <sub>Ip<\/sub> according to NF EN 60439-1<\/strong>: A simplified approach to calculating <sub>Ip<\/sub> for low voltage is given in NF EN 60439-1: <sub>Ip<\/sub> = n.<sub>Ik<\/sub><\/p>\n\n<p>n taking the following values :<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table class=\"has-border-color has-custom-couleur-1-border-color has-fixed-layout\" style=\"border-style:solid;border-width:2px\"><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><sub>Ik<\/sub> in kA<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">n<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><sub>Ik<\/sub> \u2264 5<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">1,5<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">5 &lt; <sub>Ik<\/sub> \u226410<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">1,7<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">10 &lt; <sub>Ik<\/sub> \u2264 20<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">2<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">20 &lt; <sub>Ik<\/sub> \u2264 50<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">2,1<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">50 &lt; <sub>Ik<\/sub><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">2,2<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-d2e57342\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Switching devices<\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\"><strong>Circuit breakers<\/strong>: The manufacturing standards for circuit breakers, NF EN 60947-2 for LV and EN NF 62271-100 for HV, impose a minimum ratio between short-circuit closing capacity and short-circuit breaking capacity. This ratio is compatible with the <sub>Ip\/Ik<\/sub> ratio defined above. Consequently, there is no need for a specific check: any circuit-breaker with an adequate short-circuit breaking capacity will also have an adequate short-circuit closing capacity.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\"><strong>Switches:<\/strong> The manufacturing standards for switches, NF EN 60947-3 for LV and EN NF 62271-103 for HV, require manufacturers to supply the short-circuit closing capacity of the devices (<sub>Icm<\/sub> or<sub>Ima<\/sub>). Like the short-circuit rating of circuit-breakers, this value may vary according to the switch&#8217;s operating voltage. Note that combining a switch with an upstream short-circuit protection device (DPCC) can increase the switch&#8217;s <sub>Icm<\/sub>. In this case, refer to the coordination tables supplied by the manufacturers. When selecting an equipment reference, it is therefore necessary to check that the short-circuit closing capacity of the device is higher than the peak value of the short-circuit current <sub>Ip<\/sub>.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\"><strong>Contactors:<\/strong> Contactor manufacturing standards do not define an intrinsic value for short-circuit closing capacity. However, they do define test procedures to ensure that a contactor\/DPCC\/thermal relay combination is capable of withstanding short-circuit closure up to a given <sub>Ip<\/sub> level. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-67ca831d\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">elec calc\u2122 software: the choice of manufacturer references<\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\">When selecting an equipment reference, it is therefore necessary to check that the short-circuit closing capacity of the contactor\/DPCC\/thermal relay combination is well above the peak value of the short-circuit current <sub>Ip<\/sub>. There is no choice but to refer to the coordination tables supplied by the manufacturers. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"nc-justify-text\">The <strong>elec<\/strong> calc\u2122 software calculates the peak value of short-circuit currents at any point in the installation. The calculation method depends on the installation standard chosen and the voltage level. When selecting a switch manufacturer reference,<strong> elec<\/strong> calc\u2122 checks that the component&#8217;s intrinsic <sub>Icm<\/sub> is greater than the <sub>Ip<\/sub>.
